Things can go real fast: Easter Monday I found mother and son (8½ weeks old) all cuddled up together for some mother&son quality time.
Tuesday night we came home to find Nezhdan limping with his right front leg.
Wednesday morning I came down stairs to find Nezhdan lying on the couch and not moving, with a very red nose and hot ears & feet.

Nezhdan was limping with both front legs, and later started to walk jerky on all four. Time to visit the vet!!
The vet found a high fever (41,0°C, normal temperature in the morning around 38,0 - 39,0°C) and diagnosed Nezhdan with ataxia. Ataxia is a condition of the nerves, causing the patient to make clumsy movements (I guess the medical description would be more elaborate, but this is what I understand about the condition for now). It can be caused by high fever, so let's hope he will regain full health! The vet treated him with medication to bring the fever down, a pain killer and antibiotics, and of course we have to monitor his intake of water and food. He went to sleep for 3 hours right after he came home. Then Nezhdan came out of his carrier box and started to eat and drink and look around for his mom....
Thursday April 20, 2006: Nezhdan is moving around, eating, drinking and visiting the litter box. His movements are still some what stiff and shaky. He has lost some weight, due to the fever. For now his temperature seems OK. He is 9 weeks old today!
April 27, 2006: 10 weeks old and he got better! We do see some little shakiness, left from the fever, but otherwise he's back to his normal self. The vet has advised to wait a little bit with the worming tablets and also not to give his shots too soon (this is not a problem as we don't have a situation of cat related epidemics in our home town right now, but that has been different in the past!), but other wise he's fine! We're very relieved!!

Nezhdan seems to like not to eat from a plate as the adult cats do, but he finds his food in other places.... And yes, I'm the crazy cat lady who puts it there for him to find!  His half sister Dariia came to inspect the lid (of a large bucket I use to store their food in) to see if any thing was left. On the right side: Nezhdan about as large as in real life! 10 weeks old.....
May 15th: Nezhdan is 3 months old tomorrow!!
And yes: he's quite comfortable....

Due to his fever a few weeks ago, I decided to postpone his shots a bit, until both our vet and I were sure Nezhdan had completely recovered from the Ataxia. Thursday May 18th was the big day. He did *not* like the needle nor the trip to and fro, but once we were back home he settled with a friend and slept it off.

Nezhdan has grown up as an only kitten, with our cat group assisting momma Clava a great deal. She felt one kitten just wasn't enough and went into heat when Nezhdan was about 6 weeks old. We kept Clava and our boy Buian seperated, but as before, they still managed to mate and a new pregnancy was the result. When Nezhdan was 9 weeks old she left him to the other cats to raise him, and they did a fine job. He is liked by all cats, only not by his big sister Dariia, who thinks he's a real little *********, and has some real friends among our cats. Here are some pictures of Nezhdan with the other cats. Since he has had his second set of shots when he was 16 weeks old, he now is officially ready to go to a new home. He'll have his own page as all other kittens do, so find new pictures and stories in his own page. Please also visit his new baby sisters who were born 16 weeks after he was born. All three will have no pedigree; we feel they should not be bred, but live their lives as happy neuters.

The last picture of this page: with Pippi, his second mother. Colour wise almost believable.....
